Submersion

Involvement: Director, Producer, Editor

Submersion is, at it’s essence, a horror film about the lifelong effects of trauma and child abuse. It was created for the Dallas Horror Film Race and was written, shot, and edited within 7 days. At the awards ceremony on October 30th we were nominated for 8 awards, and won Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

We wanted to shoot this on a 5D Mark III using the Magic Lantern RAW hack, which we knew would present a number of challenges during production. There was an on set DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) who dumped and tagged the two 1,000x CF cards. Audio was recorded using a Zoom H6 with the mid-side mic and a Sennheiser MKE-600 on a boom. Footage was given meta data and basic grading in Davinci Resolve 9.1.6 then exported for FCPX for editorial. After the edit was completed we went back to Resolve (v.10b3 due to an XML bug in 9.1.6) and relinked to the DNG files for final grading.
